PF Flyers 9U and 12U win rain-shortened tournaments
The PF Flyers 9U and 12U teams won rain-shortened Fall Bash for Cash tournament put on by Tournaments for a Cause two weeks ago.
It was the 9U Flyers’ first tournament ever and first tournament win.
Both teams went 2-0 on Saturday before rain washed out bracket play.
The 9U team began with a 12-9 win. Jax York threw two innings, allowing no hits, one run and striking out six. The Flyers trailed 1-0 after one inning, but they put up three runs in the top of the second on a three-run triple by Steely Edwards to take the lead.
The Flyers added four more runs in the top of the third and five runs in the top of the fourth.
In the game, Hunter Crispin was 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored the three RBI.
Jaxon Shelton got the two final outs to lock down the win.
In the second game, the Flyers trailed 8-3 heading into the bottom of the third.
Shelton singled with one out. After he stole second and third, Thomas O’Donnell knocked him in with an RBI single. O’Donnell eventually scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Lincoln Sandlin added a two-run single to cut the deficit to one.
The Flyers added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Ayzik Lockhart started the rally with a one-out single. Jax York hit an RBI double to tie the score. Shelton drove York in to put the Flyers ahead. Crosby Harris and Crispin added RBI singles later in the inning.
Lockhart pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing no hits and one run while striking out four.
Harris was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, a double and an RBI.
The 9U Flyers finished the fall 2-2.
The 12U Flyers started the tournament with a 16-2 win. They pounded out 10 hits.
Ryan Edwards led the way. He was 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Max Roberts was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Colton Rash went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Tim Finley drove in three runs.
On the mound, five Flyers pitchers each threw one inning. Ryan Edwards, Peyton Johnson, Roberts and Isaac Mahle limited the PYO Patriots to just three hits and no earned runs. They struck out five.
The Flyers had to rally in the second game of the day. The team fell behind 5-0 to the Mason Aftershock before putting up seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Andrew Hicks started the rally with a walk. Silas Lincoln singled. Johnson then singled on a bunt. Carter Cassidy brought home the first run with an RBI groundout. Chase Collins and Rash added RBI singles before Roberts hit a grand slam to put the Flyers up 7-5.
But the Aftershock battle back to tie the score in the top of the fifth.
Hicks started the bottom of the fifth with a walk. Lincoln singled on a line drive to left and Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
It appeared the Aftershock might escape the inning unscathed when Cassidy flew out to center and the relay home nailed Hicks trying to score the winning run.
But Collins hit the first pitch he saw for a single to right, scoring the go-ahead run.
Tim Finley pitched a scoreless top of the sixth to preserve the win.
The 12U Flyers are 7-2 this fall.
